Lorraine Madsen - Biography and Artist's Statement

I originally painted in oils as a hobby, as most of my time was consumed with family and work obligations. After retiring, I began my serious pursuit of painting and concentrated on watercolors, influenced by my friend and fellow artist Susan McLean. It was during this period that I supplemented my art background with classes at Brookdale College and with noted area artists Theresa Heidel, Ann Simon and Jane Lux.

The Jersey shore and New England, as well as historical sites, were my favorite subjects. My paintings of the razed Stout farm and barn are permanently displayed in the Neptune Historic Museum. I was also commissioned to do paintings of private homes. Along with selling my works, many have been donated for fund raising purposes to organizations such as the American Heart Association, the Cancer Fund, Wall High Boosters, and Caldwell College.

My interest was sparked anew when Susan introduced me to abstract art with classes given by Georgette Pettit at the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury. These classes enabled me to let my imagination and creative use of colors proceed beyond the depiction of a specific scene or of a structure. It's the freedom of the medium that pleases me the most. I have continued to supplement this background by attending classes at the Guild conducted by James Kent.

I believe that traditional art is very rewarding and appealing to most, but the challenge of abstract art is to allow the artist the opportunity to present her own feelings and ideas in a painting. Hopefully, this will create a connection between viewer and artist.

I have displayed my works at the Brick, Point Pleasant, and Wall Libraries and at the Allenhurst Art and Music Festival. My works have been accepted in juried shows at the Art Alliance in Red Bank and the Guild in Shrewsbury, where I received an award for the use of acrylics in creative abstract art.

I am currently a member of the Art Alliance, the Audubon Artists of New York, the Belmar Arts Council, the Guild of Creative Art, and the Manasquan River Group of Artists.
