I love the freedom of Abstract Expressionism; freedom to use any color and create any shape, freedom from the boundaries of representational art. In January 2005, I signed up for a Lyrical Abstract Expressionism class taught by Georgette Pettit. That class opened up a whole new world for me and started my path towards abstract expressionism. I paint with abandon applying paint with large, loose brush strokes combined with "calligraphy". My passion for abstract art complements my love for Fine Art Photography. The experience and skills I develop from painting abstracts further enriches the composition of my photographs. I carry a camera with me at all times, always alert to my surroundings, ready to take a picture when it presents itself. While I try to capture the beauty of the realistic world around me in my photographs, my paintings capture the excitement of colors, lines and shapes that represent nothing and everything. Each of my paintings has a story to tell and it's up to you, the viewer, to discover it. As a natural extension to my "calligraphy" I discovered Line Art. I create a design with one line without taking the pen off the paper and then add finishing touches. They are whimsical, fun and delightful pieces that appeal to all ages. And, as one form of art leads to another in the continuing evolution of an artist, I am now looking at using my line art as a basis for creating sculptures. Although I hold a Masters degree in Computer Science I keep in touch with the artist within me. I take art classes when I can - at the University of the Philippines in Manila where I'm originally from, the George Washington University in Washington DC where I lived for a few years, and at the Guild of Creative Arts and Brookdale Community College both in Monmouth County, NJ where I currently reside. I have done representational art in oil, pastel and watercolor but it is in abstract expressionism that I found my true calling. My art works have been accepted in Juried Art Shows at the Monmouth County Arts Council, Art Alliance of Monmouth County in Red Bank, NJ and the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury, NJ. |
